The Biggest Mistake Leaders Make About Organizational Transformation

October 07, 2026•1 min read

Every organization wants transformation. Yet many transformation initiatives struggle, not because leaders lack vision, but because they may be solving the wrong problem.

When change slows down, the default explanation is often this:

“Our people are resisting change.”

But after years of working with organizations across different industries, I’ve begun to question that assumption.

What If People Aren’t the Primary Obstacle?

What if the organization itself is making change difficult?

I’ve seen companies invest heavily in leadership development, digital transformation, culture building, and communication campaigns while leaving decision making, accountability, governance, and organizational structures largely untouched. We ask people to behave differently, yet we expect them to succeed inside the same system.

This is the transformation paradox many leaders overlook.

Why This Matters for the Philippines

This is why Organization Development deserves a broader, more strategic conversation in the Philippines. It should not be treated as an HR initiative, a training program, or a communication plan. It should be treated as the discipline of designing organizations that are capable of executing strategy.

This insight has become one of the driving ideas behind my continuing work on the State of Organization Development in the Philippines, a multiyear effort grounded in executive conversations, practitioner insights, and real transformation engagements.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing practitioner observations and emerging frameworks that reflect what is actually happening inside Philippine organizations. Not theory, but field reality.

The Question Leaders Should Be Asking

Perhaps the most important transformation question isn’t “How do we change our people?”

Perhaps it is “Have we designed an organization where change can actually succeed?”

A Call to the Community

I’d love to hear from CEOs, business owners, HR leaders, and fellow OD practitioners. Looking back on your own transformation journey, what turned out to be a bigger obstacle than you originally expected?
